Formerly a Golf Course, Now a Sanctuary in Hunters Glen, MD
Our mission for our longtime client was to create a landscape plan for this new and unique property. The project stands out because the property stands on a former golf course, which is now developed as a community within an environmental sanctuary.
The homeowner contracted Hively to create a landscape plan for this unique four-acre property. The land needed to be graded to promote ideal drainage. We also found that installing a large variety of plantings and shrubs was essential to suit the stylish home and the nature of its surroundings.

Design
Due to the unique requirements of building in an environmental sanctuary, the team had to remain aware of the design impact to the ecology and beauty of this two-lot, four-acre property. Ultimately, the integrity of the property was maintained by intentionally and cohesively incorporating natural and manmade elements:
A beautiful pool and sauna tub
Earthy blue, gray, and rusty-toned patio pavers
Ample open space for moving around the pool and into the dining area
Beautiful planting beds to diving the patio pavers from luscious green lawns
A roofed patio and adjoining wooden lattice pergola provide respite from the elements
The grand-yet-welcoming entryway blends natural stone pavers with stone-clad pillars
Five wide, stone-clad steps, edged with red brick, are a subtle nod to the fiery exterior
A wooden trellis and planting beds engage a pop of green and colors reflecting the season
The back paved patio offers comfortable seating, indicated in circular flagstone
A hidden corner reveals a natural stone-clad fire pit–a serene space
Natural stepping stones throughout make a rustic walkway through the many hidden gems on this property
Numerous points of whimsy such as the brass bird bath, scattered seating, subtle stone carvings, and wall sculpture all add their own fascination to this stunning property.
Gates, fences, and a babbling brook welcome nature while offering it a designated space.
Construction
Hively graded the property to promote proper water flow, but it was important to make these grade changes subtle to create a natural appearance and feel. We filled the landscape with a wide variety of annuals, perennials, and shrubs that are native to the region. Overall, this property both blends into its environment and stands out for its functionality. No one element is the core of this project, it moves seamlessly from one point of interest to the next.
Ongoing Maintenance
Hively continues to maintain this property with our TotalCare scheduled maintenance services. Hively also performs large planting projects at this home annually, including a yearly installation of over 200 mums and 2,000 bulbs. The total bulb count on the property is now in excess of 10,000. The permanent plant count is in excess of 2,500 and growing.
Gorgeous natural stone and green living elements abound on this beautiful estate, grounding the property in nature and its environmental sanctuary surroundings. See more of what Hively has to offer below.
